GPA is a student's average grade, computed on a four point-scale:

LAUSD & Athletic GPA

  • LAUSD Official GPA
    • Computation of student's marks earned from ninth grade through the first semester of the 12th grade
    • Used to determine class rank within the entire senior class of the school, determine the high honors, select valedictorian and salutatorian, select students for various honors/awards
    • Extra points are given for courses designated as AP and courses
  • LAUSD (W) GPA
    • Overall weighted GPA
    • Starts from 9th grade and continues until 12th grade
    • Repeated courses are averaged
    • Extra point is given for UC approved Honors and AP courses
  • LAUSD (UNW) GPA
    • Overall unweighted GPA
    • Starts from 9th grade and continues until 12th grade
    • All courses are included in the computation except Physical Education courses
    • No extra points are given for Honors and AP courses
  • Athletic Eligibility GPA
    • Calculated using all grades for classes enrolled for the selected term and grading period.
  • NCAA Core GPA
    • Only NCAA approved core courses posted to the transcripts will be considered
    • Each semester course is awarded 0.5 units of credit, a year long course is awarded 1.0 units; if a course is repeated, only the higest grade counts; to calculate quality points, multiply the value of the grade earned by the course units; add 0.03 points to the value of the grade earned for each AP course where the student received a "D" or better, with a maximum of 1.0 point; GPA is calculated by dividing the sum of the quality points for all core courses by the sum of the course units completed
 

UC, CSU, & Financial Aid GPA 

 
UC (Capped) GPA
  • Starts from the summer before 10th grade until the summer after 11th grade
  • Only uses A-G courses in the computation
  • 11 A-G courses must be completed by beginning of senior year
  • Courses may only be repeated once and only if the grade is a D or F
  • If the exact course in which a D or F grade was originally earned is repeated and a grade of C or better is earned, the original grade will not be included in the GPA calculation
  • When a course grade of a D or F is cleared through validation, both the original grade and the grade earned in the higher level course will be used in calculating the GPA
  • A maximum of 4 certified honors courses, AP courses, and/or community college courses that are UC transferable can be given extra points in the 10th grade, for courses with a grade of "C" or better
  • A total of 8 UC certified honors courses, AP courses, and/or community college courses that are UC transferable can earn an extra grade point
 
UC (W) GPA
  • Starts from the summer before 10th grade until the summer after 11th grade
  • Only uses A-G courses in the computation
  • 11 A-G courses must be completed by beginning of senior year
  • Courses may only be repeated once and only if the grade is a D or F
  • If the exact course in which a D or F grade was originally earned is repeated and a grade of C or better is earned, the original grade will not be included in the GPA calculation
  • When a course grade of a D or F is cleared through validation, both the original grade and the grade earned in the higher level course will be used in calculating the GPA

UC ELC GPA
  • Only 11th grade students will be processed
  • Students must have completed at least 11 A-G courses by the start of senior year
  • Starts from the summer before 10th grade until the summer after 11th grade
  • Only uses A-G courses in the computation
  • If course is repeated, both grades count
  • All UC certified honors courses, AP courses, and/or community college courses that are UC transferable can earn an extra grade point
 
CSU GPA
  • Starts from the summer before 10th grade until the summer after 11th grade
  • Only uses A-G courses in the computation
  • Courses may be repeated for a better grade any number of times
  • If the exact course in which a D or F grade was originally earned is repeated and a grade of C or better is earned, the original grade will not be included in the GPA calculation
  • When a course grade of a D or F is cleared through validation, both the original grade and the grade earned in the higher level course will be used in calculating the GPA
  • A maximum of 4 certified honors courses, AP courses, and/or community college courses that are UC transferable can be given extra points in the 10th grade, for courses with a grade of "C" or better
  • A total of 8 UC certified honors courses, AP courses, and/or community college courses that are UC transferable can earn an extra grade point.
 
Financial Aid (Initial) GPA
  • Calculated only for 11th and 12th grade students
  • Starts from fall of 10th grade to the summer of 12th grade
  • If course is repeated, the highest grade counts
  • Remedial courses, physical education courses, and ROTC courses are not considered
  • No extra grade points for Honors or AP courses.
 
Financial Aid (Post) GPA
  • Calculated only for 12th grade students
  • Only appropriate for community college applicants after the 12th grade has been completed
  • Starts from the fall of 10th grade through the summer after 12th grade
  • If course is repeated highest grade counts
  • Remedial courses, physical education courses, and ROTC courses are not considered
  • No extra grade points for Honors or AP courses
